Being Blind in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
العمى في المنام
In Islam, dreaming that you are blind concerns your religion first. The Ibn Sirin collection says that blindness is going astray in religion, and also a gain of money coming from some relatives on the father’s side. According to another opinion, a poor man who sees himself blind becomes rich. Blindness can also announce forgetting the Qur’an.
وأما العمى فهو ضلال في الدين وإصابة مال من جهة بعض العصباتIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “As for blindness, it is going astray in religion, and a gain of money coming from some relatives on the father’s side.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 25, vol. 1, p. 203
This sentence is found in the chapter on illnesses and disabilities. There the collection sets a rule: “every loss of sight is a loss in religion” (vol. 1, p. 202). The eye, it says elsewhere, is a man’s religion and the insight by which he sees right guidance and error. According to the collection, blindness can also mean that people no longer speak of the dreamer.

Blindness appears mostly in the chapter on illnesses of the Ibn Sirin collection (chapter 25, vol. 1). Other cases are found in the chapter on the parts of the body and in the chapter on miscellaneous subjects. Here are the cases it describes, in the order of the text.

Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
Frequently asked questions
Is seeing yourself blind in a dream a bad sign in Islam?
For the religion, yes: blindness is going astray in religion, and every loss of sight is a loss in religion (vol. 1, pp. 202 and 203). The collection also sees in it a gain of money coming from relatives on the father’s side and, according to another opinion, wealth for the poor man.
What does being blind in one eye mean in a dream in Islam?
The collection makes a distinction according to the dreamer. A discreet and honest man who sees himself blind in one eye is a believer who is sincere in his testimony. A dissolute man loses half of his religion, commits a great sin, or a worry or an illness brings him to the edge of death (vol. 1, p. 202).
What does getting your sight back in a dream mean?
The collection speaks of a blind man treated by a man who then sees again: that man guides him to what is useful for him and brings him to repentance (vol. 1, p. 203). It also mentions whoever washes his face with rainwater: his sight becomes sound (vol. 2, p. 44).
What does seeing someone blind or guiding a blind person in a dream mean?
Whoever sees himself leading a blind man guides someone who has gone astray to the right path (vol. 2, p. 356). An absent relative who comes back blind announces the dreamer’s death (vol. 1, p. 203). The collection gives no other meaning for help given to a blind man.
Does the meaning change depending on who has the dream?
Yes. The collection distinguishes the poor man, who becomes rich according to one opinion, the honest man and the dissolute man for the lost eye, and the man living far from his country, whose exile lasts. It makes no distinction between men and women, nor between a married and a single woman.
