Cooking in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
الطبخ في المنام
In Islam, dreaming of cooking is mostly about money and plans. According to the Ibn Sirin collection, whoever cooks something on the fire and sees it cook obtains what he wants in wealth. If the food does not cook, he does not obtain what he seeks. According to another opinion, cooking a pot announces great wealth coming from the ruler.
وأما من رأى أنه يطبخ بالنار شيئا ونضج فإنه يصيب مراده في مال فإن لم ينضج لم ينل مرادهIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “Whoever sees himself cooking something on the fire, and it cooks, obtains what he wants in wealth. If it does not cook, he does not obtain what he wants.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 51, vol. 2, p. 304
This sentence is in the chapter on hunger, thirst and eating. The collection comes back to cooking in several places: in the chapter on food, for the cooking pot and its utensils, in the chapter on fire, for the fire lit to cook, and in the chapter on trades, for the cook. The result of the cooking matters: what cooks announces a goal reached.
The meaning according to what you saw
Here are the cases the Ibn Sirin collection describes for cooking, from the chapter on food to the chapter on trades. For meat and fish themselves, see the pages on meat and on fish.

Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
Frequently asked questions
Is cooking in a dream good or bad in Islam?
It depends on the cooking. According to the collection, food that cooks announces a goal reached in wealth, and, according to another opinion, cooking a pot means great wealth coming from the ruler. But it also sets a rule: whatever the fire has touched is, in a dream, a provision that carries some sin (vol. 1, p. 225).
What does cooking meat in a dream mean in Islam?
Meat and broth in the pot are a noble provision, already gained (vol. 1, p. 224). Lighting a fire to grill meat, on the other hand, announces an affair in which people are backbitten, and eating this grilled meat a small provision with sadness (vol. 2, p. 190).
What does cooking rice in a dream mean in Islam?
The collection does not speak of cooking rice as such. It says that a dish of rice is a good that comes from a quarrel and a worry, and that raw rice is a loss and an illness (vol. 1, p. 233). Beans, lentils and chickpeas, cooked or roasted, are a worry and a sadness for whoever eats them, and a large quantity of them is a good (vol. 2, p. 231).
What does it mean when food does not cook in a dream?
The collection is clear: if what is cooked on the fire does not cook, the dreamer does not obtain what he wants (vol. 2, p. 304). An empty pot on the fire is also a bad sign: he pushes a man towards something hateful with his words (vol. 2, p. 190).
What does seeing a cook in a dream mean in Islam?
The collection places the cook among those whose trade is done with fire. It makes him a man of talk, quarrels, evil and sins, like those who serve the ruler or the brokers of the markets (vol. 1, p. 302).
Does the collection speak of cooking for someone else, or of couscous?
The collection does not speak of cooking for another person, nor of couscous. The cases it describes are the pot, its utensils, the fire lit to cook, food that cooks or does not cook, and the cook.
