Bed in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
السرير في المنام
In Islam, a bed seen in a dream points, according to the Ibn Sirin collection, to what gladdens and honours the dreamer, and often to his wife. Being on a bed with bedding announces a rise, on a bare bed a journey. A broken bed announces a loss of position or a separation. The unmarried man sitting on an unknown bed marries, if the bed is made up or beautiful.
وقال القيرواني إن السرير دال على كل ما يسر المرء به ويشرف من أجله ويقر بهIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “Al-Qayrawani said: the bed points to everything that gladdens a man, that honours him and that sets his mind at rest.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 47, vol. 2, p. 264
In Arabic, sarîr (bed) and surûr (joy) come from the same root. The collection also recalls that the bed is the seat of kings, and that it can point to a means of transport, because the sleeper travels on it while his soul leaves his family. It separates the bed itself, which it links to wood, from the bedding laid on it, the firâsh, which first of all means the wife.
The meaning according to what you saw
The main passage is in the chapter on carpets, bedding and beds. The collection comes back to the bed in other chapters, such as the one on death. Here are the cases it describes.
| In your dream | Meaning in the collection |
|---|---|
| You are on a bed | Something that left your hands comes back to you. A ruler weakens and then grows strong again, like Solomon (peace be upon him) (Qur’an 38:34). (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, pp. 263 and 264 |
| You are on a bed and want to marry | A marriage. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, p. 264 |
| The bed is made up with bedding | A higher rise, and renown among people who are hypocrites in their religion. Without bedding, a journey. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, p. 264 |
| The bed and everything one sleeps on, according to others | The wife and all one’s livelihood. The legs of the bed are the servants, its outside the wife, its inside the dreamer, and its lower part the daughters. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, p. 264 |
| Your bed breaks or comes apart | The king loses his power, the judge is dismissed. For a married couple: the man separates from a rebellious wife, loses a sick wife, dies himself if he is the one who is ill, or moves away from her through a journey or by neglecting her.vol. 2, p. 264 |
| You are on an unknown bed | Kingship for whoever is worthy of it, otherwise a high position. The unmarried man marries and the pregnant woman gives birth to a boy, if the bed is made up or beautiful. Without bedding, a long journey, and death for a sick person.vol. 2, p. 265 |
| The bedding (firâsh) | Your wife. According to another opinion, bedding you know is your wife: what happens to the bedding happens to her.vol. 2, pp. 261 and 262 |
| You change bedding or see a second one beside yours | You marry another woman, according to how the new bedding looks. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, p. 262 |
| You fold up your bedding and put it away | You are away from your wife, or she is away from you.vol. 2, p. 262 |

| You die on a bed | A rise. Dying on bedding announces good coming from your family.vol. 1, p. 105 |
| Ants on the bed | Children.vol. 2, p. 8 |
Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
Frequently asked questions
Is seeing a bed in a dream a good sign in Islam?
Often, yes. For the Ibn Sirin collection, the bed points to what gladdens and honours the dreamer, and a bed with bedding announces a rise. There are harder cases: a bed without bedding announces a journey, and for a sick person death. A broken bed announces a loss of position or a separation.
What does a broken bed mean in a dream in Islam?
According to the collection, whoever sees his bed break or come apart loses his power if he is a king, and his post if he is a judge. For a married man, he may separate from his wife, lose her if she is ill, or move away from her (vol. 2, p. 264).
Is the meaning different for a married woman, a single woman or a pregnant woman?
Here the collection makes a few rare distinctions. The unmarried man sitting on an unknown bed, made up or beautiful, marries, and the pregnant woman gives birth to a boy (vol. 2, p. 265). For the rest, it speaks mostly from the man’s point of view: the bedding means his wife. It gives no meaning of its own to the married woman.
What does making the bed, a big bed or several beds mean in a dream?
The collection does not speak of making the bed, nor of a big bed as such; it speaks of the bedding (firâsh). Wide bedding means the wife’s good character. According to one opinion, a second bedding beside one’s own announces a second marriage. Folding one’s bedding and putting it away announces a time apart between husband and wife.
A bed with or without sheets: what is the difference?
The difference is clear in the collection. According to an opinion it reports, a bed with bedding announces a higher rise and renown. A bed without bedding announces a journey, a long one if it is an unknown bed, and death for a sick person.
