Bracelet in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin

السوار في المنام

In Islam, a bracelet seen in a dream by a man is generally a constraint, and the gold bracelet is the most disliked. The Prophet ﷺ interpreted two gold bangles seen in his hands as two liars. The silver bracelet is better: it stands for a righteous man who strives in doing good. For a woman, jewellery is an adornment.

السوار من رآه من الرجال فهو ضيق فان كان أسورة من فضة فهو رجل صالح للسعي في الخيراتIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “The bracelet: for a man who sees it, it is a constraint. If they are bracelets of silver, it is a righteous man, given to striving in good deeds.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 40, vol. 2, p. 150

This sentence opens the passage the collection gives to the bracelet, in the chapter on gold, silver and jewellery. For silver bracelets, the collection quotes the verse: “And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver” (Surah al-Insan, verse 21). The material therefore counts a great deal: gold is disliked, silver is better.

The two gold bangles in the hadith

Ibn Abbas reported these words of the Prophet ﷺ, which had been told to him:

بينا أنا نائم رأيت أنه وضع في يدي سواران من ذهب، ففظعتهما وكرهتهما، فأذن لي، فنفختهما فطارا، فأولتهما كذابين يخرجان“While I was sleeping, two golden bangles were put in my two hands, so I got scared (frightened) and disliked it, but I was given permission to blow them off, and they flew away. I interpret it as a symbol of two liars who will appear.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 7034, narrated by Ibn Abbas

Ubaydullah, one of the narrators, specifies that one of the two was al-Ansi, killed by Fayruz in Yemen, and the other Musaylima. The collection quotes this hadith in its passage on gold (vol. 2, p. 136).

Before you interpret your dream

Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.

Frequently asked questions

Is seeing a gold bracelet in a dream good in Islam?

The collection is reserved. Wearing a gold bracelet is an inheritance, but a gold bracelet in the hand is a fettered hand, and two bracelets announce something unpleasant. The Prophet ﷺ interpreted two gold bangles as two liars (al-Bukhari, 7034).

What does a silver bracelet mean in a dream in Islam?

The silver bracelet is better than the gold one. It stands for a righteous man who strives in doing good, and if he has enemies, Allah helps him. According to other opinions, it is a son and a servant, or an increase in wealth (vol. 2, p. 150).

Is the meaning the same for a man and for a woman?

No. For a man, the bracelet is first of all a constraint. For a woman, jewellery is an adornment, and the bracelet can stand for her husband (vol. 2, p. 136).

What does a broken or lost bracelet mean in a dream?

The collection does not speak of a broken bracelet or a lost one. It only deals with a bracelet that is worn, seen or put on someone’s wrist, according to its material.

What about bangles or a bracelet of pearls or diamonds?

The collection uses one word for the bracelet and the bangle, so the cases on this page apply to both. It does not describe a bracelet of pearls or diamonds. Pearls have their own passage, where they can stand for the Qur’an or for children.
