Eating in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
الأكل في المنام
In Islam, eating in a dream points first of all to provision. The Ibn Sirin collection says that all food is provision, except three dishes it names apart. The meaning changes with the taste and the manner. Food that is sweet and easy to swallow announces a pleasant life, food that is bitter or rough a spoiled life. Eating at the table of a just imam is an honour.
وكل الطعام رزق خلا الهريسة والبيض والعصيدة فإنه غم من جهة أعماله في ذريتهIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “All food is provision, except harisa, eggs and ‘asida, which are a worry coming from one’s deeds towards one’s descendants.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 27, vol. 1, pp. 230 and 231
In chapter 27, which deals with foods, this sentence follows the case of someone who drinks his food like water, and whose provision becomes wide. The collection at once makes an exception for three dishes. It then treats each food separately, and comes back to hunger, being full and invitations to eat in chapter 51.
The meaning according to what you saw
Here are the cases where the collection speaks of eating itself, of hunger and of meals. Particular foods have their own pages.
| In your dream | Meaning in the collection |
|---|---|
| You are hungry, or you eat your fill | Hunger is a loss of money and greed in seeking one’s living. Being full means obtaining one’s living and seeing one’s money come back. According to other opinions, hunger is better than being full, and whoever sees himself hungry obtains good while remaining greedy.vol. 2, p. 303 |
| Someone invites you to a meal | To the morning meal: a journey that is not far, according to the verse: “We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue” (Surah al-Kahf, 18:62). To the midday meal: you rest from fatigue. To the evening meal: you deceive a man before he deceives you.vol. 2, p. 303 |
| You eat a meal and digest it | You hold fast to effort in your trade.vol. 2, p. 303 |
| You eat the flesh of another person | Raw: you backbite that person or one of their relatives. Cooked or grilled: you consume another person’s capital.vol. 2, p. 303 |
| You eat at a laid table | According to some interpreters, the table is a noble and generous man: sitting at it means keeping his company, and eating from it means benefiting from him.vol. 1, p. 222 |
| You eat far more at table than usual | A long life, in proportion to what you eat. If the table is taken away, life is coming to its end. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 1, p. 223 |
| You spread food out on the ground | You treat a blessing of Allah with contempt.vol. 1, p. 223 |
| You eat with a dead person | Your life grows longer. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 1, p. 107 |
| You eat with a just imam, at his table | Honour and good in your religion and in this world, in proportion to what you ate. The same applies with the king and the ruler.vol. 2, p. 388 |
| Food so sour it cannot be eaten | An illness or a pain that prevents eating. If you eat it, sadness or illness. If you eat it patiently, praising Allah, relief.vol. 1, p. 231 |
| What you swallow is rough, bitter or salty | Your life, your living and your earnings are spoiled to that extent. If it is tender, sweet or pleasant, a good and peaceful life, unless it is a food disliked in interpretation, such as figs, black grapes or yellow melon.vol. 2, pp. 364 and 365 |
| You feed a poor person | You come out of your worries, and you are safe if you were afraid. Feeding a disbeliever means strengthening an enemy.vol. 1, p. 96 |
Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
