Dust in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
التراب في المنام
In Islam, dust seen in a dream most often points to money. The Ibn Sirin collection says that dust stands for people, because they were created from earth, and also for this world and its wealth. It can, however, point to poverty and the grave. A cloud of dust announces a journey, and wind laden with dust announces war.
والتراب يدل على الناس لأنهم خلقوا منه وربما دل على الأنعام والدواب ويدل على الدنيا وأموالها لأنه من الأرضIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “Dust points to people, because they were created from it. It can point to livestock and beasts. It points to this world and its wealth, because it comes from the earth.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 39, vol. 2, p. 68
The collection adds that the Arabs say of a man that he “has become covered in dust” when he has grown rich. Yet dust can also point to poverty, death and the grave, because it is the bed of the dead. The same Arabic word, turâb, means both loose earth and dust: the cases where you gather earth, eat it or get dirty with it are explained on our page on earth.
The meaning according to what you saw
Here are the cases the collection describes for dust (turâb) and for a cloud of dust (ghubâr), apart from those already covered on the page on earth.

Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
Frequently asked questions
Is seeing dust in a dream a good sign in Islam?
Often, yes, because the collection says that dust is money and this world. But it quotes unfavourable cases: a heavy rain of dust is a punishment, wind laden with dust is war, and dust raised at a gallop is discord.
What does cleaning or sweeping dust mean in a dream in Islam?
According to some interpreters, sweeping your house and gathering the dust means using cunning to take money from your wife. Gathering it in your shop means gathering money from your livelihood. Sweeping the dust from the roof means the loss of your wife’s money (vol. 2, p. 69).
What does a dust storm mean in a dream in Islam?
The collection says that wind that comes with dust points to war (vol. 2, p. 42). A simple cloud of dust announces a journey. According to another opinion, it announces famine if it comes with thunder and lightning, and otherwise booty (vol. 1, p. 274).
What does dust in the house mean in a dream?
The collection does not speak of a house that is simply dusty. It speaks of a house that collapses and whose dust reaches the dreamer: an inheritance. It also speaks of dust gathered while sweeping the house (vol. 2, p. 69).
What if you eat dust or get dirty with it in a dream?
These cases are set out on our page on earth, because the collection deals with them together with earth. In short, swallowing dust is money, and getting dirty with dust makes a rich man lose his money.
