Neck in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin

العنق في المنام

In Islam, a neck seen in a dream is the place of the trust (al-amâna), according to the Ibn Sirin collection. A neck that grows thicker announces more religion and a trust well returned, and a neck that shrinks, a trust poorly returned. A snake coiled around the neck points to someone who does not pay zakat, and neck pain to bad conduct towards one’s companions or a betrayed trust.

وأما العنق فموضع الأمانةIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “As for the neck, it is the place of the trust.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 22, vol. 1, p. 157

The trust (amâna) means anything that must be given back: something entrusted, a debt, a promise, a contract. The collection often comes back to this rule, for example for cupping (hijâma) or for a scarf placed over both sides of the neck. The case of a severed neck is explained on the page about killing.

The meaning according to what you saw

The main passage is in chapter 22, on the parts of the body. Other cases come from the chapters on death, illnesses, bonds, jewellery and household objects.

Before you interpret your dream

Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
