Room in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin

الغرفة في المنام

In Islam, seeing a room in a dream is generally a good sign in the Ibn Sirin collection. The upper room stands for elevation, safety for someone who is afraid, and Paradise, based on two verses of the Qur’an. It also announces wealth, power and riches, healing for the sick and a wife for the single man.

والغرفة ملك يصيبه صاحبها وعز وغنى يناله وللمكروب فرج وللمريض شفاء وللعزب امرأة زوجIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “The upper room is a possession that its owner obtains, a power and a wealth that he attains. For the distressed, it is relief, for the sick, healing, and for the single man, a wife.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 39, vol. 2, p. 90

The Arabic word used in the collection, ghurfa, means the upper room, the one built on the upper floor, above the house. Its meaning comes from this height: what rises above the rest. The collection also relies on the Qur’an, where the believers dwell in Paradise in upper rooms, in safety.

Before you interpret your dream

Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.

Frequently asked questions

Is seeing a room in a dream good in Islam?

Yes, in almost every case the Ibn Sirin collection mentions. The upper room announces elevation, safety, wealth and riches. The only delicate case is the man who builds a room while his wife objects: he will take another wife.

What does a bedroom mean in a dream in Islam?

The collection does not speak of the bedroom as such. It speaks of the ghurfa, the upper room built on the upper floor. For the bed, it reports in another chapter the opinion of some interpreters: the bed and everything one sleeps on stand for the wife and all the means of living (vol. 2, p. 264).

What does an empty, dark or messy room mean in a dream in Islam?

The Ibn Sirin collection does not speak of it. It describes no empty room, dark room, messy room or flooded room. The cases it gives concern the upper room that you see, that you build or that you go up into.

What does going up to a room mean in a dream?

According to the collection, going up into an unknown room brings safety to someone who is afraid, and elevation and joy to others. If people follow you as you go up, you will be at their head. For the sick person, the text says that he “reaches Paradise” (vol. 2, p. 89).

What does seeing a room in a dream mean for a single person?

The collection announces a marriage. A single man who sees himself in a room will marry a beautiful, high-ranking and pious woman (vol. 2, p. 90). The text speaks of a single man; it says nothing specific for a single woman.
