Necklace in a Dream in Islam: Meaning by Ibn Sirin
القلادة في المنام
In Islam, a necklace seen in a dream is generally a good sign. The Ibn Sirin collection says that for women, the necklace is their beauty, their adornment and what they wish for. Worn by a man, it announces a responsibility or a trust placed in his care. The meaning changes with the material of the necklace, and a necklace whose string breaks is a bad sign.
القلادة والعقد هما للنساء جمالهن وزينتهن ومناهنIn the Ibn Sirin collection: “The necklace and the necklace of strung pearls are, for women, their beauty, their adornment and the object of their wishes.”
Muntakhab al-kalâm, chapter 40, vol. 2, p. 148
This sentence opens the collection’s passage on the necklace, in the chapter on jewellery and precious stones. The text distinguishes two words: the qilâda, the necklace in general, and the ‘iqd, a necklace made of pearls strung on a thread. For a man, it speaks mostly of responsibility, of a trust and of marriage. For a man who studies, it speaks of the Qur’an and of knowledge.
The meaning according to what you saw
The Ibn Sirin collection deals with the necklace in chapter 40, on gold, silver, jewellery and stones. Here are the cases it describes, in the order of the text.
| In your dream | Meaning in the collection |
|---|---|
| You wear a gold necklace with pearls and rubies | A position of responsibility over the affairs of the Muslims, or a trust placed in your care. The stones of the necklace stand for the worth of this responsibility, its extent and its outcome. Another passage gives the same meaning to a necklace of gold, silver, glass beads or precious stones.vol. 2, pp. 136 and 148 |
| A necklace of strung pearls and coral | Scrupulous piety and fear of Allah, with memorisation of the Qur’an, in proportion to the fineness of the pearls, their beauty, their number and their value.vol. 2, p. 148 |
| A man wears a necklace with silver coins | Marriage to a beautiful woman. The rubies and stones of the necklace are her beauty.vol. 2, p. 148 |
| A necklace of silver and precious stones | A wide responsibility, with money and joy.vol. 2, p. 148 |
| A necklace of iron, brass or glass beads | Of iron, a responsibility carried out with strength. Of brass, the passing goods of this world. Of glass beads, a weak and fragile responsibility.vol. 2, p. 148 |
| A woman wears a necklace | For women, the necklace is wealth that their husband has entrusted to them.vol. 2, p. 149 |
| Jewellery worn around the neck, according to another opinion | For a woman, it stands for her husband and her children: just as the jewellery surrounds the woman, so do the husband and the child. For a man, the same dream announces a treacherous murder, a plot against him and affairs that become tangled. The collection explains that this meaning comes from the shape of the jewel. Its stones play no part in it. (another opinion quoted in the collection)vol. 2, p. 149 |
| A man wears a necklace of strung pearls around his neck | If he is learning the Qur’an, he gathers it. If he studies fiqh, he masters it. If he is bound by a pledge or a contract, he keeps it. Otherwise, if he is unmarried, he marries a woman who recites the Qur’an well. If a pregnancy is expected in his household, he will have a boy.vol. 2, p. 149 |
| The string of the necklace breaks and the pearls scatter | Whoever is bound by a pledge breaks it. Whoever knows the Qur’an by heart forgets and neglects it. Otherwise, his knowledge scatters and is lost.vol. 2, p. 149 |
| A necklace of several strands, or of precious stones | When several strings are joined, the precious stones are the Qur’an, the pearls the Sunnah, and the other stones wisdom, good speech and fiqh. A woman’s necklace is her husband or her child. A necklace of precious stones points to faith, knowledge and the Qur’an.vol. 2, p. 149 |
| A neck ring (tawq) around a man’s neck | The good that the wife does for her husband. If it is wide, the husband’s wealth. Well made, the husband’s knowledge. Of iron, his strength. With wood in the middle, his hypocrisy. For a ruler, a victory, and for a merchant, a profit. If it is narrow, the dreamer is miserly. If he is a pious man, no one among the people of religion benefits from him, and if he is a scholar, he hides knowledge. According to another opinion, the neck ring, whatever its material, is a corruption in religion.vol. 2, pp. 149 and 150 |
Before you interpret your dream
Not every dream carries a meaning. The Prophet ﷺ described three kinds: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a distressing dream, which comes from Satan; and what a person tells himself during the day (Sahih Muslim, no. 2263). Only the first is read with a collection like Ibn Sirin’s. See the three kinds of dreams, and if your dream frightened you, what to do after a bad dream.
